SENAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AWARDED ASIA PACIFIC SMALL AIRPORT OF THE YEAR 2018 08 Nov 2018

SINGAPORE, 8 November 2018 - Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (Senai International Airport), a Member of MMC Group was named ‘Asia Pacific Small Airport of the Year 2018’ under category 10 million annual passengers at the recent CAPA Asia Pacific Aviation Awards for Excellence 2018.

CAPA's Aviation Awards for Excellence are regarded as the pre-eminent awards for strategic excellence in aviation held annually with two award events, one covering the global industry and another for Asia Pacific including the Middle East. CAPA's Aviation Awards for Excellence are intended to reward airlines and airports that are not only successful but have also provided industry leadership in adjusting to a new environment. The awards are independently researched by an independent international panel of judges and not driven by customer surveys or sponsorship.

The Asia Pacific Small Airport of the Year 2018 Award was presented to En Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd by CAPA Executive Chairman, Peter Harbison at a gala ceremony held in Sentosa, Singapore.

Dato’ Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, the Chairman of SATSSB remarked, “We are truly honored and excited to receive this Award as it signifies our presence in the aviation industry and recognises our unwavering efforts in providing value added services for our customers and passengers.”

Senai International Airport was selected for its leading role in using new biometrics technology and its support of the LCC model, which has driven rapid growth.

“Senai International has had tremendous growth and has emerged as a leader in airport technology while operating in the shadow of much larger KLIA and Singapore Changi,” Mr Harbison said.

“Senai has developed a close win-win relationship with AirAsia, positioning it for more rapid growth and providing a model for other small airports in the region seeking to attract LCC hubs.”

In early 2018 Senai International Airport became the first airport in Asia to implement AirAsia’s Fast Airport Clearance Experience System (FACES), a cutting-edge biometrics technology providing a seamless self-service travel experience from check-in to boarding gates. By embracing the new technology, Senai Airport has improved its customer service and operations efficiency, enabling the airport to accommodate further rapid growth. Senai International Airport is currently connected to 19 destinations, including 12 domestic and seven international links.

The airport welcomed its first three millionth passengers in 2017 and passenger traffic has nearly tripled over the last six years with at least 10% growth every year since 2013. International traffic has grown from only 17,000 passengers in 2012 to 444,000 passengers in 2017.

Md Derick said, “We believe the growing demand from air travelers going via our airport is spurred by Iskandar Malaysia’s rapid development and vibrant economic activities, in addition to the commitment by our airline partners to mount flights from Senai Airport”.

“We forecast that the passenger traffic for full year 2018 will grow by 11% from 3.1 million in 2017 to 3.5 million passengers in 2018. International passenger volume is expected to grow by 33% while domestics, taking 80% of the total volume will increase by 7% against the previous year”.

Md Derick also shared that the growth is mostly attributed by the increased capacity created with the introduction of new routes by AirAsia to Alor Star and Ipoh, Malindo’s chartered flights to Sanya and Haikou and Jin Air’s scheduled flight to Seoul, Korea.
