SENAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HOLDS FULL-SCALE EMERGENCY EXERCISE TO TEST EMERGENCY RESPONSE18 Dec 2018

JOHOR BAHRU, 18 December 2018 – Firefighters battled out to extinguish fire while emergency services personnel rushed to “rescue” 57 victims of a “crashed” ATR72 aircraft at Senai International Airport during a full-scale emergency exercise.

According to the exercise scenario, the ill-fated flight was travelling from Subang to Johor Bahru, when a technical issue occurred during its final approach causing the flight to skid and crash-off the runway opposite the cargo terminal area.

The full-scale emergency exercise was conducted by Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (Senai International Airport), a member of MMC Group, led by the Airport Fire and Rescue Services Department (AFRS) aiming at ensuring the level of readiness and coordination of the airport authority and relevant agencies in the event of air disaster.

More than 300 participants from various agencies including Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM), Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN), Pejabat Keselamatan Kerajaan Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Police (RMP), Malaysia Civil Defence Department (APM), Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) and airlines representatives among others took part in measuring their effectiveness and response time.

The full-scale exercise was carried out as per the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP), a documented procedure and contingency plan to attain corresponding action among all relevant stakeholders based on the distinct guidelines. It was also held in compliance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and CAAM for all airports in Malaysia to conduct a full-scale disaster practice once every two years.

Senai Airport Chief Executive Officer Md Derick Basir said, "The exercise provides an opportunity for our team to prepare and ensure the effectiveness of coordination and communications between agencies using real-time scenario.”

“The findings of the exercise will be evaluated and utilized to further improve the emergency response levels and the overall performance of the various services,” he added.

During the drill, the airport’s AFRS personnel responded immediately with three fire tenders including the airport’s newest addition, the ‘Rosenbauer’s Phanter’ which comes with High Range Extendable Turret (HRET) feature. The new fire vehicle which costs about RM5 million offers the latest technology for various emergency aviation situation, increase rescuing time efficiency and reduce exposed risk to the AFRS personnel in duty.

The exercise also saw the airport cargo terminal being converted into a full setup of Air Disaster Unit (ADU) by the medical teams from Trauma and Emergency Unit of Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim which stationed the “wounded victims” and “casualties”.
