AIRPORT EMERGENCY EXERCISE19 Dec 2024

SENAI, 19 December 2024 – Senai International Airport, managed by Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. (SATSSB) conducted a Full-Scale Emergency Exercise today as part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest safety and preparedness standards. The public is advised not to be alarmed, as this is a simulated event designed to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of the airport’s “Airport Emergency Plan” (AEP)

The simulated scenario involved an aircraft on final experiencing technical issues causing it to veer off the runway with high impact, crash upon landing, and engulf in a blaze where it finally comes to rest near the edge of the cargo apron. An aircraft mock-up was prepared based on the common aircraft in JHB with 100 passengers on board. The emergency call sign from the aircraft was ‘crash on-airport’.

The AEP is a comprehensive contingency plan that aligns all relevant stakeholders to take swift and coordinated actions in the event of an actual emergency. Mandated by the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Airport Service Manual Part 7.

Mr. Kennedy Ayu, Chief Executive Officer of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd., emphasised the importance of such exercises, stating that, “As the main gateway to the Southern Region for air travel, conducting full-scale emergency exercise is crucial. This exercise helps us test our ability to manage emergencies under realistic conditions, involving critical stakeholders such as emergency services, medical responders, regulatory authorities, and other key agencies.

“The focus of this simulation is to strengthen the 3Cs – Communication, Coordination, and Control – which are the pillars of an effective emergency response. By identifying weaknesses, addressing gaps, and improving our collaboration and procedures, it will ensure that we are always ready for any situation. Our ultimate goal is to provide the best possible outcomes for the entire airport community, not just the airport itself,” he
stated.

More than 200 participated in the full-scale emergency exercise which involved the airport personnel, security, firefighting services as well as airline personnel, which was an excellent opportunity to rehearse their ability to respond in an emergency. Aircraft Firefighting is a specialised trade that involves unique equipment and training designed to deal specifically with aircraft fuel spills and fires.

On scene to assist, as they would in an actual emergency, were from various agencies amongst others were the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), National Security Council (MKN), Chief Government Security Office (CGSO), Civil Defence Force Department, Ministry of Health (KKM), Kulai Hospital, Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI), Royal Malaysia Customs, Immigration, Meteorology Department, and Senai International Airport Petronas Depot, and 100 UTM students who acted as injured passengers.
