KULAI: The upgrading works for the Senai International Airport, to be on par with international standards, which cost around RM7 million is expected to be completed by end of August.

Johor Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Tee Siew Kiong said that the renovation work which started on October last year is now 80% completed.

He said that the main focus of the upgrading process is to enhance the security standard at the airport, to fulfill the requirement of segregating the international and domestic passengers.

“This is because the current setting doesn’t segregate the domestic and international passengers which doesn’t comply safety standards,” Tee told a press conference at the airport today, after a working visit at the airport.

He reasoned that there wasn’t a lot of international flights at the airport in the past to necessitate a separate gate.

Tee said that the upgrade however was needed since the volume of passengers coming and going through the airport has increased since 2015.

The increase in flight destinations is the reason of the jump in passengers using the airport.

He said that up to the second quarter of this year, 1.54 million passengers were recorded compared 1.36 million passengers for the same period in 2016, a jump of 9%.

“Now, the airport has 11 domestic destinations and five international while the frequency of flights is 610 every week.”

In another effort to increase the security at the airport, additional 74 units of close-circuit television cameras (CCTV) were installed, making it a total of 148 CCTVs upon completion of the renovation.

The press conference was also attended by the Johor Tourism director Mohd Shukri Mohd Masbah and the Senai International Airport chief executive officer (CEO) Derrick Basir.
